“Traditionnnn! Tradition!”  goes the famous Broadway song from Meerkats on the Roof Fiddler on the Roof.

It turns out that meerkats have their own traditions quite aside from the ones immigrant meerkats followed in the early part of this century (pictured here on arrival to Ellis Island), and you can see those other ones over here on BBC.

And do you know what else today is? It’s Bastille Day! The meerkat reminded me. Allons, Meerkats de la Patria! Or should that be “meerchats?”

Alas, the Meerkat did not celebrate safely. I don’t know what time the Meerkat came home from his meerkat merriment, but this is how we found him in the morning:

Lilly was dark-eyed, vivacious and winsome but she couldn’t get a date. The 3 year-old meerkat living in at Twinlakes Park in Melton Mowbray, UK, was lonely after an arranged marriage fell through.

The BBC reports that staff at Twinlakes decided to set up a meerkat dating website for Lilly, and soon a suitor was found, described as “lovely” and  “very nice mannered” and it was reported that “they’re getting on really well.” He has been named “Mr Darcy.”

Yes, Virgina, there is a Christmas Meekrat. As a matter of a fact, I also read of a Chanuka Meerkat recently, when Treasure, an adorable knitted meerkat of NiftyKnits, traveled to Jerusalem to spend Chanuka with Israeli bead artist Hadas of Springcolors.

The Christmas Meerkat, on the other hand, is closer to home, and was my questionably creative way to dealing with single-holiday-sockdom. There it was, a lone sock, green and sparkly silver snowflaked and red all over, alas, but with no mate. What to do?

Christmas Meerkat graces my stoop in his holiday finery, attracting much admiration, so much, in fact, that the next day neighbors added a giant tree ornament.  And then tonight, the Christmas Meerkat brought me a gift!

Ghiradelli chocolates, some other yummies and a lovely snowflake mug — yay!

Maybe I should call him the MyrrhKat.

It’s been way too long since I brought you another meerkat sighting. Yes, apparently even the national Geograohic is cutting back.

The crafter behind this shop in fact creates knitted meerkats of all ages and proclivities: Halloween meerkats, Star Trek meerkats, superhero meerkats … but I’m particular to this “Dad” meerkat which, once again, for reference and in the name of science,  looks like Joey the Neighbor Dog:
