Hookah is a popular pastime in many countries in the Middle East, Turkey, the Arabian peninsula, India and making a social splash in the Americas and Europe as well. In the Levant ( Jordan, Lebanon, Israel, Iraq, etc) it is often called “nargila” and in the Northern Africa and Arabian peninsula, “shisha.”
In countries where alcohol is not drunk, many young people enjoy shisha in nightclubs. Sweet tobacco, or herbal-fruit mixtures, are used and nowadays the flavors are varied and exotic, reminding us in a way of the “anything goes” martini craze of the 90s: jasmine, rose, apple, cherry, chocolate, coffee, cola…
